Noorani Qaida vs Nazirah: Where Should My Child Start?
Noorani Qaida is a beginner's primer that teaches the Arabic letters, vowels and joining rules step by step. Nazirah means reading the Qur'an by looking at the text, with correct pronunciation and Tajweed. A child who cannot yet read Arabic starts with the Qaida stage, then moves on to Nazirah. At Deeniyat Online School, both stages are part of the Nazirah & Tajweed course.
What is Noorani Qaida?
The Qaida (Arabic: "base" or "foundation") is a short primer used across South Asia and beyond to teach Qur'anic reading. The best-known version is the Noorani Qaida. It moves step by step: individual letters, joined letters, vowels (harakat), tanween, sukun, shaddah, madd, and finally short words and phrases from the Qur'an.
Its purpose is simple: to give a child every building block they need before they open the Qur'an itself.
What is Nazirah?
Nazirah (from the Arabic for "looking") means reading the Qur'an by looking at the text — as opposed to hifz, which means reciting from memory. A Nazirah student reads from the Mushaf, applying Tajweed, while the teacher listens and corrects. The goal is to read the whole Qur'an correctly and independently.

So where should my child start?
- Can't recognise Arabic letters yet? Start at the Qaida stage.
- Recognises letters but struggles to join them? Start partway through the Qaida.
- Reads words but slowly, or with mistakes? Move into Nazirah, with focus on Tajweed.
- Reads fluently? Consider Daura-e-Qur'an to complete the Qur'an with Seerah and Duas, or Qur'anic Arabic to understand it.
A common mistake is rushing a child from the Qaida into the Qur'an before the basics are secure. It feels like progress, but it leads to reading mistakes that are hard to fix later.

Our Nazirah & Tajweed course covers both stages as one continuous path — from the first letter to reading the Qur'an on your own. In a first class, free of charge, the teacher checks exactly where your child is and places them at the right point, in a small class with children at the same level.

Is Noorani Qaida necessary?
A primer like the Noorani Qaida is the most common and reliable way to build the basics. Some teachers use other primers; what matters is that the student masters letters, vowels and joining before reading the Qur'an.
What does Nazirah mean?
Nazirah means reading the Qur'an by looking at the text, as opposed to hifz, which is reciting from memory.
How long does the Qaida stage take?
It depends on the child's age and practice. With daily classes, many children complete it within a few months.
