Mohammad Shafi Mir teaches the Qur'an, Tajweed and Qur'anic Arabic at Deeniyat Online School, an online school based in Kashmir. He holds an MA in Arabic from the University of Kashmir, where he was a gold medalist, together with a Fazil in Islamic Studies, an MA in Urdu and a B.Ed., and has been teaching for more than twenty-five years.
A scholar of Arabic, and a trained teacher
His study of Arabic at university level means that when he teaches the Qur'an, he teaches it with a deep understanding of its language. His training as a teacher means he knows how to explain — patiently, clearly, and in a way that suits each age. And his MA in Urdu, together with his command of Kashmiri, Hindi and English, means that students can learn in the language closest to them.
How he teaches
His classes rest on a simple principle: every student must be heard. Students read aloud, and he listens, correcting each letter until it is right — in the way the Qur'an has been passed on from teacher to student for fourteen centuries. This is why classes are kept small.
Each course follows a structured syllabus, so that students always know where they are and what comes next, and no one is hurried past something they have not yet understood.

The classes are taught by Mohammad Shafi Mir, who has more than 25 years of teaching experience. He holds an MA in Arabic from the University of Kashmir, where he was a gold medalist, as well as a Fazil in Islamic Studies, an MA in Urdu and a B.Ed.
Which languages are the lessons taught in?
Lessons are explained in Urdu, Kashmiri, Hindi or English, so each student can learn in the language they understand best. The Qur'an itself is, of course, read in Arabic.
How many students are in a class?
Classes are kept small, so that every student can read aloud and be corrected in every class. Students learn alongside others of a similar age and level.
